Open Source Leaders Collaborate on Disaster Recovery

In a bid to address security for desktop Linux, open source providers FarStone Technology and Linspire are partnering to offer a Linux version of FarStone’s Personal Disaster Recovery software solution, RestoreIT.

The software, designed to complement Linspire’s desktop Linux-based operating systems, allows users to restore lost... data or an entire system that has been damaged due to computer errors or other common mishaps.

“As desktop Linux grows in popularity and becomes the operating system of choice for many consumers, small businesses and academic institutions, common PC disasters will likely affect Linux users as seen with Windows users,” says Tom Fedro, executive vice president, FarStone.

“Whether recovering from OS failure, finding a deleted file, undoing the effects of spyware and other malicious attacks, [we are] positioned to provide fast data and OS restore functionality to Linspire and the Linux market. We are pleased to be working with Linspire to develop RestoreIT for Linux, a solution we firmly believe will become the standard in the desktop Linux market.”

“Having an easy mechanism to protect them from the unforeseen system failure or accidental user error is very important to us,” adds Randy Linnell, Vice President of Business Development for Linspire. “[Even though] there are backup and recovery solutions available for advanced Linux users, FarStone was the only solution that we were confident would be powerful, flexible, and easy enough to use for all computer users.”

With RestoreIT users can reset their entire system to an earlier, pre-crash, pre-problem state, even if the operating system won’t boot. The software tracks all changes to a user’s hard drive on a separate hidden disk partition as incremental back up points.

In the event of a disaster, a user can restore the system and data that they have lost, as well as choose how far back they would like to go. Since it loads before the OS, RestoreIT will recover all files, system applications and personal settings and passwords. In addition to automatic backups per a user defined schedule, RestoreIT can also be configured to automatically restore to pre-defined backups on a regular basis.
